Can I Replace Missing and Damaged Tiles or Shingles?

When it comes to replacing damaged or missing roof tiles or shingles, one misstep could result in some very costly repairs. Learn how to do it right the first time!

The answer to the question is yes, but it should be noted that experts recommend that you only do so in emergency situations. In all other instances, you should contact a professional roofing contractor to do the work for you.
Let’s take a closer look at how different types of shingles or tiles should be repaired:

Composition Shingles

When it comes to composition shingles, the preferred method of repairing curled or torn shingles is roofing cement. The shingles that are going to be repaired should be stabilized with a hefty board or nails until the cement has had adequate time to dry.
To start replacing a composition shingle, slowly and carefully lift the shingle located directly above the missing one position the replacement shingle underneath it. Be careful to ensure that the new shingle doesn’t catch around any edges. Then, it should be carefully nailed into place.

Wooden Shakes or Shingles

For wooden components, the repairs should be performed with a piece of aluminum that can be positioned under the shingle. The aluminum will serve to protect the exposed part of the roof, but it won’t be visible from street level. Replacing a wood shingle or shake requires a specialized tool called a shingle ripper. Because most homeowners do not have this tool on hand, it is best for you to call a professional to replace the missing shingle.
However, if you must do it yourself, make certain that the replacement shingle is positioned with a ½ inch overlap covering the shingle below it. Additionally, once the new shingle has been nailed into place, make certain the nails are bent properly, so they fit underneath the shingle above.

Roofing Tiles

To replace a roofing tile, all of the broken pieces of the old tile should be removed. The surrounding tiles should be gently lifted, so the new tile can be slid into place until it hooks right over the batten.
