Roofing Options

Jacksonville roofingIf your roof has worn, aged, or curled shingles, is missing shingles, it may be time for a new roof. There are many options that are available, many that are new or newly engineered with current technology. If you’ve never put a roof on a home before, or if it’s been 20 years since your last roofing project, take some time to become familiar with what the different options are, and what their benefits are. Whether you choose asphalt, wood, or a metal roof for your Jacksonville FL home, know your options before you make a decision.

Asphalt Shingles

Currently one of the most popular roof choices, asphalt shingles are one of the least expensive roof options. They are available in a variety of colors, and the shingles currently on the market today have a life expectancy of 20 to 30 years. The low cost and long life make these the most economical as well as popular choice.

Architectural Shingles
Considered an upgrade from standard asphalt shingles, architectural shingles are made from the same materials, only they are structured and layered differently to be thicker, and the layers are staggered to give them their signature “architectural” appearance. Depending on the color choices, these shingles can slightly resemble slate or wood shakes. Architectural shingles are only a slight increase in price from standard shingles, and will carry the same long life expectancy. Some may actually have slightly longer warranty periods due to their heavier weight and construction.

Wood Shingles
Wood shingled roofs have a unique appearance that gets better over time. Generally done in cedar, cypress, pine, and redwood, the shingles will generally fade to a gray or silvery color that makes the home appear natural in the surrounding landscape. Most shakes and shingles are available in pressure treated and fire resistant varieties. Wood shingles and shakes are more expensive to install than asphalt shingles, and require periodic maintenance to remove mildew and to oil the wood. Wood shingles have a long life expectancy, usually from 30 to 50 years.

Metal Roofing
Metal roofing ranges from the more industrial galvanized sheets to elegant copper. The more rugged metal roofs are ideal for utility applications such as barns, sheds and other farm buildings. Copper sheets have been used on fine buildings, high end homes, and as points of interest over bay windows. In between the two extremes are panels manufactured from steel, aluminum, copper, and zinc, and can be manufactured to resemble more traditional materials such a shingles, tile or shake. Finding a metal roof for your Jacksonville FL home is simply a matter of taste and budget.

Metal roofing is considered to be significantly more environmentally friendly than shingles as they can be made from recycled products, can be recycled at the end of their usefulness, and can often be installed directly over an existing roof eliminating the need for a tear-off and disposal.

The cost of a metal roof varies widely depending on the material and installation type that is chosen, it ranges from the most affordable to almost prohibitively expensive. They do, however, have a long life expectancy due to their resistance to cracking, lifting and eroding, and most will last at least 50 years or more making them a very sound investment.

Tile
Popular in the Mediterranean, as well as in the Mediterranean architecture of Florida, ceramic tile roofs are a beautiful and unique installation. The tiles are quite heavy so they can only be installed on very solid structures. Their weight also means that the installation is very labor intensive, and the best materials are also very expensive. Although a tile roof is well on the expensive end of the roofing spectrum, they are also the most durable with an average life expectancy of 60 to 80 years, sometimes even longer.

The choices for roof options are many and varied. Whether you choose shingles, tile, or a metal roof for your Jacksonville FL home, you will be able give your home the appearance you are looking for. If you want to simply blend in with the rest of the neighborhood, or stand out from the crowd with a stylish, environmentally friendly option, a perfect match is available for you.
