What is the Minimum Slope I Need for Asphalt Shingles?

Asphalt.jpgAsphalt shingles do require that you have a minimum pitch to your roof. Fortunately, the requirements are quite accommodating.
If you’re having asphalt shingles put on your roof, you will have to have a minimum slope. They won’t be appropriate for all roofs. There are plenty of other options, however, for flat and nearly flat roofs that you can use, as well.

The Slope

A qualified roofer best will be the best choice for calculating your roof’s slope. By having the roofer measure your slope, they can also give you recommendations right on the spot, which can save time.

There are differing opinions as to the minimum slope for a roof, but the generally accepted minimum is 3/12. This number corresponds to the number of inches of rise in a 12-foot run. Some people recommend not installing asphalt shingles on slopes below 5/12, but a skilled roofer may well be able to make this work. Some roofers hold that the slope can be as low as 4/12.

Building Codes

Building codes may play a role in whether or not you can have asphalt shingles installed on your roof. A qualified roofer will be able to let you know whether asphalt shingles are appropriate for your house. If they are, there are quite a few different options for asphalt shingles. You can even purchase asphalt shingles that are made out of a modified asphalt material that is designed to take impacts from the worst type of weather people experience in Florida, including hailstorms.
New Options

Remember that a qualified roofer may be able to present you with a wide range of options if asphalt shingles are not appropriate. Having new asphalt shingles installed on a roof in need of repair can oftentimes improve the energy efficiency of your home and, of course, it’s a big cosmetic improvement.

You should also consult with your roofing contractor as to whether or not you need entirely new shingles or you simply need a roof repair. In some cases, a capable roofer may be able to repair your roof, even when you thought you needed a complete tear off.
